WE HAVE NOT PROMOTED IT IN GHANA YET.
I have been wondering why Accra is the center of everything we do. For example if one in the Central Region wants to organize a big show one has to organize it in Accra. That’s just by the way. Today I’m talking about poetry. Now there are 10 regions in Ghana and one cannot say “we are promoting poetry in Ghana” without visiting the rest of the other regions. Accra has seen enough of the poetry shows and the poets. I think now is the time we start promoting poetry in every region reaching its corners. You the reader can bear witness that only one region has been the focus from Adam. The other regions have not said that they will not enjoy poetry or spoken word if introduced to them. Most poets who make it to programs and other higher heights have to in one way or the other come to Accra or live in Accra. We can make it happen as we have done it in Accra. Kumasi is also trying but the force in it is not as potent as in Accra. If am to rule a red line, only Accra and Kumasi will be above the red line. Why is it so? I’m calling for attention to be given to other regions; the Eastern region is nearer to the Greater Accra region and I think if we start from there, or the Central region it will be great.
HOW CAN WE DO THIS?
I think it can be promoted in the Eastern region. I know people here will embrace it. When I was writing in my room, I didn’t even know of ALEWA or EHALAKASA but when I became hungry for excellence and showed my talent to the world on Social Media, I got to know some great men who are the force behind the new generation of poets and poetry in Ghana but they were all based in Accra. Now this is how I suggest we go about it if it really is our passion to promote the holiest art in the world (POETRY)
1. Poets should tour the Junior High Schools and Senior High Schools. We can engage the interest of the young ones and have them join the train. The possibility is very high.
2. Some big poetry programs should have versions in the other regions.
3. Poetry competitions must be organized frequently.
4. As it is at Ndaba Poetry, it can be done at Abrante3 or any other hub where people sit to relax.
5. Poetry on the radio must also be encouraged in this region.
6. If possible the MP’s can be contacted for help or what so ever.
There are a lot of things we can do if we really want to promote poetry in Ghana and not in Accra or Kumasi only.
It costs a poet so much to come to Accra and perform and go back home safely, about Gh 50 cedis or Gh 5 less than that. Don’t you think that person could have used it for something else if the program was near? Now calculate the amount of money the person will spend in 2 weeks or a year.
“Doing poetry outside Accra is costly than doing it Outside Ghana”.
Please help promote the art not only in Accra or Kumasi. A poet told me he has seen some poets once and he wishes he could see them often because the last time he saw them together he learnt something new. “Poetry is beautiful let’s not keep it from the other regions”. THANK YOU
